Birthday Sundress

Since my birthday is tomorrow (Sunday), one of my projects for today was to make a sundress to wear for my birthday.

This is what I had to work with…

Before - Seriously!? The dress dragged on the floor.

I really like the pattern on this dress. The floral reminded me of a dress my grandma made me when I was younger (I think it was even for my birthday). The colors and shades are different, but it is definitely from the same time.

Here is a picture of the fabric she used for the dress. It’s actually a picture of one of the darling pillows she made for me out of the same fabric.

Childhood dress fabric

The other aspects of this dress that I loved: the criss-cross in the back, the belt, and the pockets.

The criss-cross in the back is going to make the dress more interesting.

So, there were a lot of redeeming qualities to this dress, which made things a lot easier.

To get started, I snipped off the sleeves (what’s new, huh?).

Sleeves, be gone! I did like the shape of the sleeves, so they may pop up in another project.

A huge part of the length came off as well.

I could’ve made another dress out of the bottom of the skirt; there was so much fabric!

I needed to take the dress in quite a bit, and I wanted to adjust where the waistline hit. So, I pinned the sides for the new bodice, and cut down the neckline in both the front and back. Next, I had to cut and reattach the criss cross, and create new shoulder seams.

Pinned and ready

Then I sewed it all up, finished the edges, and hemmed the bottom of the dress.

The next problem was the belt. It wouldn’t go any smaller than what the before picture shows. It had a thick backing, and it would’ve been difficult to add another hole. Besides, then I’d still have a lot of extra belt hanging out.

I really loved this matching belt, and was not about to give up on it. I decided to take out my heavy duty needle, and folded the belt in the middle (right sides together). I then sewed it together at the place I’d marked, and the belt was a new size. It might not look the most professional, but it looks better than it did.

Belt pinned and ready to be sewn

So, on my birthday, I will be wearing this…Drum roll, please….

The Birthday Sundress

Oh, and I got my hair done. 🙂

The back

I don’t have any huge plans for my birthday, but I’ll be comfy and cool in this sundress.
